Irish Rail says only pre-booked ticket holders will be permitted to travel over Christmas

Take note if you’re heading home over the break.

Irish Rail has said that only pre-booked ticket holders will be permitted to travel over Christmas.

Those travelling home over the festive period have been advised to book their seat in advance from December 18 to January 6, as there will only be 50% capacity on trains during this time.

Christmas will be the first time that travel will be permitted between counties since increased restrictions were implemented to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Customers travelling on Irish Rail this Christmas are advised of the following:

  • To only travel if journey is necessary, and avoid peak and busier times if at all possible
  • 50% of seating is available for pre-booking and for use on board. Seating will be unassigned, and customers are asked not to sit in seating designated as restricted
  • Face coverings are mandatory on public transport and in stations
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitisation measures will continue on trains and at stations
  • Catering services remains suspended on board Intercity and alcohol is prohibited on all trains
  • Revised schedules are in place from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day. There are no rail services on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day
