Irish Water warns customers to watch out for email scam

"Delete it immediately."

Carl Kinsella

Irish Water has warned its customers to ignore any emails purporting to be from the company asking for customers’ bank details.

A scam has been doing the rounds in the last few days where a company that styles itself similarly to Irish Water asks for customers’ bank details for fraudulent purposes.

The subject line of the email reads “Your Irish Water account — action required,” so if you’ve seen something like that in your inbox, ignore it.

Speaking to Ocean FM on Wednesday, Richard O’Hara, Business Stakeholder Co-Ordinator with Irish Water, said: “Irish Water will never ask customers to update personal banking information or other information this way. If any customer receives such an email, they should delete it immediately.”

“So if anyone clicks on this kind of an email and gives their details then really you should contact your bank to make sure that no funds have been accessed. That’s what we’re telling people. It’s not Irish Water, it’s a scam.”
