An Irish woman remains in hospital following a freak accident
A 29-year-old Irish woman has suffered third-degree burns after a freak accident at a wedding in Spain.
The woman was attending a wedding in Nerja, Spain when her dress caught fire.
It is understood that the woman has suffered third-degree burns across 70% of her body.
According to the Spanish newspaper Sur, her dress was engulfed in flames from a decorative candle.
Authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, but are ruling it as a freak accident.
The woman’s condition has been described as uncertain, but she is being closely monitored at the burns unit of the Virgen de Sevilla Hospital in Seville.
The freak accident reportedly occurred last Thursday, September 19th.
The woman was celebrating at a wedding after-party when the incident occurred.
Fellow guests found her in a semi-unconscious state in the bathroom.
The alarm was raised shortly after midnight on September 19th. Guests were attending an after-party at holiday apartments in Nerja when the incident took place.
The woman, whose identity has not been publically disclosed, was initially rushed to hospital in Malaga.
She underwent emergency surgery at the hospital before being moved to the burns unit at Seville’s Virgen del Rocio University Hospital.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance following the accident.
In a statement to The Independent, they confirmed: “As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the detail of individual cases.”
