An Irishman in his 50s, has died after being struck by a taxi in Madrid.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, October 4, just south of the city centre in the neighbourhood of Arganzuela, when the man, believed to have been a ‘highly-regarded’ officer at Mountjoy prison, was hit by the taxi.

A spokesperson for a city emergency response centre commented on the incident: “Paramedics assisted a 52-year-old man in cardiac arrest after being hit by a taxi.

“Police officers started resuscitation efforts.

“They have reversed the cardiac arrest and are taking him to hospital in a critical condition.”

The 52-year-old was taken to Madrid’s Hospital Clínico San Carlos after being resuscitated at the scene by police, who arrived first at around 2.20am.

Shortly afterwards, he was pronounced dead.

According to the police report, witnesses said the Irish national crossed the road at a spot unauthorised for pedestrians.

The taxi was understood to have been carrying two passengers, the driver of which was identified and passed a drink-drive test.

He has not been arrested by police.

Investigators are believed to be submitting a report to a local court.

It has not yet been confirmed by authorities whether the deceased was on holiday in Madrid or residing in the area.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is 'aware of this case' and is 'providing consular assistance'.
