An Irishman has drowned after being swept out to sea during Storm Callum

A 38-year-old Irishman has died after drowning in the sea off the coast of Brighton.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 13 at 1.21am.

Local police have issued a statement in relation to the incident.

“Sussex Police received a report of a man in the sea near West Street, Brighton, at 1.21am on Saturday, 13 October. Coastguards, police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene. The 38-year-old man was retrieved from the water but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Next of kin have been informed and the matter has been passed to the Coroner’s Officer. Coastguards, police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene.”

A helicopter was used in the search after the man was seen to be struggling in the water.

According to ITV, he was plucked from the water near the Palace Pier after coastguard and lifeboat crews were alerted but sadly, he was confirmed dead after being taken back to shore.
