ISIS fighters reportedly surrendering in the stronghold city of Raqqa

Carl Kinsella

ISIS fighters in the Syrian city of Raqqa, which has served as the Islamic State’s de facto capital since 2014, are reportedly on the cusp of surrendering.

Local officials reported that roughly 100 ISIS jihadists surrendered yesterday, and that somewhere between 300 and 400 militants remain in the city. Those remaining fighters are now reportedly trying to broker a deal where they will be allowed to leave the city with several civilians to use as “human shields.”

The remaining ISIS militants in the city reportedly have extremely limited munitions and have been cut off from the group’s leadership.

The Syrian Democratic Forces have besieged the city for the last four months, and greatly reduced the terrorist organisation’s hold on the region. It is expected that the city will be liberated after a few more days of fighting.

A spokesman for the SDF told the BBC that ISIS are “on the verge of being finished.” The milestone comes months after Mosul, another major city under ISIS’ rule, was liberated.
