JK Rowling had a clever reply to a racist tweet by Donald Trump’s spokeswoman

Paul Moore

This came back to bite her.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Harry Potter series then you probably wouldn’t know the difference between a Death Eater and a Dursley but fear not because we can provide a quick lesson.

The main schism in the wizarding world occurred after certain people felt that magic should only be practiced by witches and wizards whose blood was pure. These militant people were known as ‘Death Eaters’ and were fanatical supporters of the evil Lord Voldemort in his bid to wipe out any witch/wizard that was from a family containing people from the real world, better known as ‘muggles’.

JK Rowling’s world may be fantasy but her most evil characters do have a foundation in certain fascist ideology and acts of genocide.

Fantasy met reality this afternoon when Rowling replied to an old but incredibly racist tweet by Katrina Pierson, Donald Trump’s spokeswoman.

This tweet was sent four years ago but it has come to light again after Rowling’s measured and insightful reply.
