Forget Father Ted, this is more Father Dead…

Ahead of the release of the critically-acclaimed Irish film Calvary, JOE caught up with the star and director of the film, none other than the living legend that is Brendan Gleeson and the wickedly talented John Michael McDonagh.

The pair, having worked together previously on the phenomenally funny The Guard (2011), have teamed up once more as Gleeson (now almost officially known as ‘Domhnall Gleeson’s da’) plays Father James, a good priest tormented by his small-town community, with one particular anonymous parishioner threatening to kill our holy hero in exactly one week’s time.

It’s less of a whodunit and more of a who’s-going-to-do-it as Gleeson prepares to meet his maker in this powerful and blackly comic Irish drama.

Calvary, which recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Jameson Dublin International Film Festival with great success, features an incredibly talented cast of Irish stars including the aforementioned Gleeson Junior Domhnall, Chris O’Dowd, Aidan Gillen, David McSavage, Dylan Moran and Killian Scott, as well as international stars Isaac de Bankolé and the gorgeous Kelly Reilly.

Eoghan Doherty caught up with the stars as the three talked about how the idea for Calvary was the result of a drunken night out with Don Cheadle, the pair’s future plans to make a food-related film with JOE called Carvery, and the talented two offer us some expert advice on how to deal with nasty hangovers.

Enjoy the interview…

Calvary is in Irish cinemas from Friday 11 April.
