John Gilligan has been arrested and charged with money laundering offences in Northern Ireland

John Gilligan arrested

On 15 October 2013, Gilligan was released after serving 17 years in prison.

Convicted criminal John Gilligan has been arrested in Northern Ireland on the grounds of money laundering offences, RTÉ reports.

His arrest was made on Thursday evening by Border Force officers as he was attempting to board a flight to Spain at Belfast International Airport.

It is widely understood that Dublin native Gilligan travels from Belfast Airport to avoid being spotted in the capital.

€23,000 was recovered during the arrest.

On Friday morning, Gilligan appeared at Coleraine Magistrate Court where it was decided that he will be remanded in custody until 4 September when he will appear before Antrim Magistrate Court.

The 66-year-old has been living a reclusive lifestyle of late, splitting his time between Ireland, the UK and Alicante in Spain.

In 2001, Gilligan was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the trafficking of commercial quantities of cannabis resin.

In 2002, Gilligan was tried for and acquitted of the murder of the investigative journalist Veronica Guerin.

In 1996, Guerin she was fatally shot while stopped at a traffic light on the Naas Dual Carriageway.
