Join Ireland rugby legend Tony Ward, Gerry ‘Marathon Man’ Duffy and Newstalk host Chris Donoghue as they try to Get Men Talking

Join these legends in discussing men's health...

It turns out that an apple a day may not always keep the doctor away. People get sick, even strong people, and the best way to start the road to recovery is by actively managing your health.

This means recognising any potential symptoms and getting them checked as soon as possible. This key message will be discussed at the Get Men Talking event, which is being held at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, November 4.

The event, which is part of Men’s Health Month and supported by the Marie Keating Foundation, will see a wide selection of experts discussing topics which affect men’s health. Among the guests will be former Ireland out-half Tony Ward.

The rugby legend is a prostate cancer survivor and knows first-hand the importance of being able to talk. He said: “Men need to make a conscious effort to check on their health and not pretend they’re above vulnerability.”

Ward added: “Cancer is not an easy opponent to beat but it’s only by being aware of our health and the signs and symptoms of common men’s cancer like prostate cancer and testicular cancer that we stand the best chance of winning.”

Also speaking at the free men’s health event will be ‘Marathon Man’ Gerry Duffy. Duffy will be giving a presentation on motivation, something he is familiar with having completed many endurance challenges.

These include running 32 marathons in 32 days as well as a DECA-Iron Distance Triathlon, a 10-day endurance challenge which required Duffy to swim 24 miles, cycle 1,160 miles and run 262 miles. Or as JOE likes to call it, a normal weekend.

Professor Niall Moyna, who is a Professor in the School of Health and Human Performance and a member of the Centre for Preventive Medicine in DCU, will also be speaking. He will be joined by Professor John McCaffrey, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mater Private Hospital. The Get Men Talking event will be MCed by cancer survivor and Newstalk Breakfast host Chris Donoghue.

If getting information about managing your health wasn’t a good enough reason to attend, then here are a couple more: it’s free and you’ll be given a complementary Clarins gift with samples of two Clarinsmen skincare essentials.
