‘Wind and low-lying mist’ in the area has made search conditions ‘challenging’.
An urgent search is continuing this morning (Tuesday, 13 August) for a kayaker missing off the Waterford coast.
In a statement to JOE, a Department of Transport spokesperson said that the person went missing the previous morning around Helvick Head in Dungarvan.
A Garda spokesperson has also revealed that the missing person is a male in his 60s.
According to multiple reports, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to the incident shortly before 5.30pm on Monday.
That was before a search operation was launched, which temporarily ceased late Monday night.
“Coast Guard Units from Bunmahon and Admore resumed searching from 5.30am,” the Department of Transport spokesperson added.
“Surrounding units from Tramore, Youghal and Dunmore East have also been tasked to join the search.
“Rescue helicopter R117 has been tasked to join the search, as wind conditions allow.”
The spokesperson also said that “wind and low-lying mist” in the area has made search conditions “challenging”.
In another statement to JOE, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) confirmed: “Helvick Head RNLI is involved in the operation and have been out since 5am.”
Gardaà have also said the Irish Navy is contributing to the ongoing search.
