Two men have been arrested.

The rural village of Knockanure in Kerry is in shock after the man who died from a fatal assault on Monday has been named.

Ger Kennelly, in his 40s, died in the early hours of Monday morning after an altercation outside a pub.

It has been reported that Mr Kennelly was stabbed during the row.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted just after 12.30am, however upon arrival Mr Kennelly was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A man in his 30s was arrested on Monday morning, followed by another arrest of a man in his 20s in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, locals have reacted to the news with shock, with local councillor Robert Beasley saying: “When something like this happens out in the country, it’s always a shock.

“It is devastating news for the family and the whole area.”

One local in Knockanure told Cork Beo: “Knockanure is a very quiet and peaceful village, everyone knows everyone and we’re a close-knit community – this is the last thing anyone would expect.”

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, local councillor Mike Kennelly (no relation to the deceased) said: “For something like this to happen in an area like this is truly shocking.

“It is a shellshock that this is happening, and my sympathies are with the family of this man.”

The councillor also described Knockanure as “probably the most quaint little village in Kerry”.
