The historic attraction beat out the likes of the Taj Mahal and the Acropolis.

Kilmainham Gaol has been named the world’s best museum, and one of the globe’s top tourist attractions overall by Tripadvisor.

The jail, located in the heart of Dublin 8, was handed the prestigious title by Tripadvisor users and was ultimately named the 13th best attraction in the world.

Beating out the likes of the Acropolis in Greece (14th), the Taj Mahal in India (23rd) and Petra in Jordan (24th), the historic Dublin landmark has firmly cemented itself as a must-see destination on any trip to the nation’s capital.

The jail of course holds such significance given it was the location of the executions of the 1916 Easter Rising leaders, as well as being one of the largest unoccupied prisons in Europe.

There were also welcome inclusions for other Irish attractions, with the Emerald Isle’s Top 5 being named as: Kilmainham Gaol, the Little Museum of Dublin, the Tenement Museum, the Irish Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum and the Cliff of Moher.

The awarding of the world’s best museum to Kilmainham Gaol was done by tabulating all reviews left on the Tripadvisor site over a 12-month period, which saw the attraction receive 19,737 ‘excellent’ reviews from a total of 24,408.

Clare’s Cliffs of Moher also featured strongly in the travel site’s recommendations, placing highly in their ‘bucket list’ experience category. It was named fourth best in the world behind only the Dubai Red Dunes, Peru’s Incan trail treks and Alaska’s Juneau whale-watching tour.

The top three tourist experiences in the world according to Tripadvisor users were the Grand Circle Island and Haleiwa Tour in Hawaii, the Thai cooking course in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the Ubud tour in Bali.
