‘At least four dead’ following avalanche in popular French ski resort Tignes

At least four people have died in an avalanche at the ski resort of  Tignes in France.

According to sources at the BFMTV channel, as many as nine skiers were buried in the snow during the incident.

Tignes is a commune in southeastern France’s Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region and one of Europe’s most popular ski resorts.

Rescue services are currently at the scene.

The Telegraph reports, “the 400-metre wide avalanche occurred at an altitude of 2,100 metres (6,900 feet), in an off-piste section of the ski area at Tignes, a popular resort near the Italian border.”
