Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has sought to dampen expectations somewhat ahead of today’s budget in the Dáil.

Speaking outside Leinster House on Tuesday morning, Varadkar warned that there would be “no fireworks, no big bonanza” in today’s budget delivered by Minister for Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe at 1pm.

But he did say that increased spending in this year’s budget will mean more money spent on education and health, which will mean more teachers, doctors, nurses and gardaí.

He also promised the biggest health and education budget ever.

Varadkar described it as a good budget overall but without any fireworks or bonanza.

Speaking on his way into Government Buildings, Varadkar confirmed that the budget has been agreed with Fianna Fáil and the Independent Alliance.

According to Varadkar, it’s expected that the average family will have €500-€600 more in their pocket each year following today’s budget.

Meanwhile, Paschal Donohoe has claimed today’s budget will lay the foundations for a more resilient and fairer Ireland.
