A spokesperson for the Taoiseach has said Leo Varadkar was complying with Covid-19 guidelines while he socialised with friends in the Phoenix Park over the weekend.

Pictures of Varadkar, along with his partner Matthew Barrett and two others, were posted to social media.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Varadkar said he was within the 5km travel limit as he is currently staying in Stewards Lodge during the Covid-19 emergency.

The statement said Varadkar has been staying in the Farmleigh Estate because the lodge has secure office and video conferencing facilities which allow him to work from home.

The spokesperson also said that Varadkar pays a nightly fee to use Stewards Lodge, like previous taoisigh.

Current government guidelines state that people should stay home as much as they can but groups of up to four people who don’t live together can meet outdoors while keeping at least two metres apart.
