A “Lidl” bit cheaper than the norm…

German supermarket Lidl have announced that they will be selling single antigen tests for €2.99 across all their stores in Ireland.

The move to cheaper antigen tests comes following MrPRICE’s launch of antigen tests for the price of €1.99 on Thursday.

“From Saturday 27th November we will be offering single antigen tests for €2.99 each across all 171 Lidl stores in Ireland,” they wrote.

“We were the first food retailer to bring these to the market back in April 2021 and now we’re delighted to be able to offer single antigen tests for less than €3, the cheapest test approved for use on the market.

“A strong supporter of antigen testing in the fight against Covid-19, we have been offering employees free antigen tests weekly in an effort to keep our frontline teams safe.

“Tests will be available to purchase from the tills. We urge all shoppers to continue to follow all public health advice and wear a mask when shopping in stores,” they concluded.

The Government is continuing to discuss subsidising antigen tests for the general public, but no confirmation of when they will be available has been shared.

“Of course, we are looking at what would be the cost in relation to this,” Minister for Finance Pascal Donohoe said on RTÉ News last week.

“But of course, anything that slows down and contains the spread of Covid; the cost of that has tended to be a very good investment in the context of the huge economic harm that’s being done by Covid in the first place.”
