Around 48,000 families across Ireland are set to receive a backdated Fuel Allowance payment in the coming weeks after changes introduced in Budget 2026 expanded eligibility.
The shake-up means recipients of the Working Family Payment (WFP) became eligible for Fuel Allowance from January 2026.
However, because the change came into effect mid-season, newly eligible households did not receive payments immediately. The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that affected families will now receive a lump sum payment covering the period from January onwards.
Fuel Allowance is currently paid at €38 per week, following an increase announced in Budget 2026 (up from €35).
If the backdated payment covers eight weeks, from January until early March, that would amount to €304.
However, the final amount paid will depend on how many qualifying weeks are covered.
The Fuel Allowance season typically runs from late September to April each year, but WFP recipients only became eligible from January 2026 onward.
This means the lump sum will reflect the weeks from January until the end of the current fuel season in April.
The Department has said payments are expected to issue in March or April.
More than 100,000 children are estimated to be living in households that will benefit from the change.
Those in receipt of the Working Family Payment now qualify for Fuel Allowance, provided:
Eligible households do not need to apply, payments will be made automatically to those who qualify.
Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment designed to help low-income households with heating costs during the winter months.
It is primarily available to people aged 66 or over who live alone and meet the income limits. However, people under 66 may also qualify if they are receiving certain social welfare payments, including:
Income limits apply, and while most sources of income are assessed under the means test, some social welfare payments are disregarded.
