Met Éireann have forecast that temperatures will drop to -2 degrees on Wednesday and that frost and ice can be expected nationwide until Thursday.

In the past hour, Gardaí have issued a specific black ice warning for Westmeath drivers on Twitter, writing: “Pls take extra care on the roads today due to Black Ice on the roads. Increase your braking distance and allow extra time for your journey. Roads affected are Killaskillen in Kinnegad, Robinstown link Rd, Mullingar & Castledaly Rd in Moate.”

The warning follows similar warnings made last week during a period of cold weather.
