Six more people died from Covid-19 in Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

Northern Ireland’s coronavirus lockdown is to be extended for three more weeks.

The news was announced by First Minister Arlene Foster, who said the decision was made following a meeting on Wednesday.

She said the regulations will be reviewed in the coming weeks but said “it’s right and it’s appropriate.”

Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill said keeping the restrictions in place was a “necessity.”

“The outbreak has not reached a point where restrictions can be relaxed,” O’Neill said.

“Lives are being saved because of these measures. This is the time to stay strong and to stay home.”

She added that while the measures were “severe”, they are asking the public to comply in order to save lives.

“Our biggest danger in this period is complacency. The measures are showing positive results but if we relax our behaviour, we will be in danger,” she said.

Six more deaths from Covid-19 were reported in Northern Ireland on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 140.

The total number of confirmed cases in Northern Ireland stands at 2,088, with 13,672 people having been tested for Covid-19.
