Low cost flights from Cork to the US have been given a significant boost

Great news…

In December, it was announced that Norwegian Air had been given a permit for US-Ireland flights meaning that they could run low-cost transatlantic flights from Ireland.

The awarding of the licence had initially been held up by the US Department of Transport following pressure from unions but it was eventually granted under Barack Obama last year.

However, 100 members of Congress in the US had written to President Donald Trump asking him to overturn the decision.

But, speaking to the media yesterday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that President Trump does not intend to revoke the licence issued to Norwegian Air, which will allow the company to run low-cost flights from Ireland to the US.

Spicer spoke of the huge economic interest in the move with Norwegian Air promising to use 50% American crews and use Boeing jets, an American airline.

Although he said he didn’t want “to get ahead of the President”, Spicer said it was an issue of US jobs, both in terms of who is working on the planes and who is building them.

Norwegian Air spokesman Stuart Buss said that they would make an announcement on their plans in the coming weeks.
