Just in time for Christmas.

Services will commence on the extension of the existing Luas Green Line from St. Stephen’s Green West to the Iarnród Éireann Broombridge Station in Cabra well in time for Christmas, the operator has confirmed.

It was confirmed on the Luas Twitter account on Wednesday that the extension will be open on Saturday, December 9, a little under two weeks before Christmas.

The news has been welcomed by business group Dublin Chamber, which said that it will provide a major boost to city centre retailers ahead of the crucial Christmas period.

Head of Public Affairs Graeme McQueen said: “It has been a long five years for businesses in the city centre, but it is fantastic to see that the line will open on-time and in advance of Christmas.

“The weeks preceding Christmas are hugely important for Dublin retailers. The opening of the Luas Cross City extension provides shops and businesses in the city with a huge boost.”

“Throughout the construction phase of the project we have worked closely with Luas Cross City, the NTA, Gardaí and other stakeholders to minimise the impact of the works on businesses and people coming in and out of the city, McQueen added.

“Luas across City shows how well Ireland can deliver big projects.”

As well as extending the green line, the Luas Cross City will create an interchange with the red line at the new O’Connell Street (GPO) stop and the current Abbey Street stop.

There will be 13 new Luas stops as a result, eight of which will be located in the city centre.

The journey from St. Stephen’s Green West to Cabra is expected to take 21 minutes.
