Luas operators call off plans to bring in buses on Paddy’s Day; talks imminent

Tony Cuddihy

Luas operator Transdev has announced that it won’t replace trams with buses on St. Patrick’s Day, with both sides set to re-engage in talks.

Transdev responded to a request by the Workplace Relations Commission not to use buses to replace the usual Luas service as drivers prepare to strike on 17 March.

“In order to create a climate of positivity to these engagements and without prejudice to the position of any party, the commission has requested the company to defer any alternative travel arrangements for Luas passengers on Thursday St Patrick’s Day,” read a statement from the WRC.

It is now hoped that renewed talks could prevent seven days of strikes planned over the next month.

Transdev MD Gerry Madden said on Monday evening: “Transdev is in resolution mode and is happy to go to talks tomorrow in the WRC and engage in meaningful discussions.”

SIPTU Divisional Organiser Owen Reidy welcomed the step away from the hiring private buses, but warned Transdev that ‘a lot of work remained to be done,’ according to RTÉ.
