Over 134,000 passengers have been affected by the cancellations.

Over 1,000 flights from Germany have been cancelled following a major strike action from union members working for the Lufthansa airline.

1,023 flights were cancelled in total on Wednesday (27 July) due to the strike action.

Three flights from Dublin to both Frankfurt and Munich were cancelled today as a result of the strike.

Both flights from Frankfurt to Dublin were affected, but Thursday’s (28 July) flight is still scheduled to take off as planned.

A flight from Munich to Dublin on Wednesday was one of few Lufthansa flights that did take off, with other passengers being given train tickets as replacements or rebooked on later flights.

The strike was coordinated by ver.di, an international trade union.

Union members say that the airline laid off too much staff during the pandemic, which has led to a severe shortage now.

Lufthansa workers are now looking for an increase of pay, including a salary increase of 9.5%.

“The warning strike announced by trade union ver.di is having a massive operational impact in the middle of the peak travel season,” Lufthansa said.

“Lufthansa will have to call off almost the entire flight programme at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for Wednesday. Looking ahead to the coming weekend, the start of the vacation season in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, Lufthansa is working flat out to return flight operations to normal as quickly as possible.”

Michael Niggemann, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, said that the escalation has caused “enormous damage”.

“In view of our high offer with very substantial pay increases over the next 12 months of more than 10% more in the pay groups up to 3,000 euros monthly basic pay and a 6% increase for a monthly basic pay of 6,500 euros, this so-called warning strike is in the middle of the peak summer travel season is simply no longer proportionate.”

The strike is set to end on Thursday.
