Macron “victory” site Louvre courtyard evacuated over “security threat”

Carl Kinsella

The site where French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron had hoped to celebrate victory tonight had to be evacuated by French police this morning.

The Esplanade du Louvre, the famous courtyard outside Paris’ Louvre museum and art gallery, was cordoned off and evacuated after a security threat on Sunday morning. A spokeswoman for the Macron campaign described the move as a “precaution.”

According to Reuters, police discovered a “suspicious object” but have since given the all clear, and people have been allowed to re-enter the courtyard.

French voters go to the polls today to choose between independent candidate Macron and his opponent Marine Le Pen.

Video from the scene shows the relative calm has been restored.
