The long and mysterious search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 appears to have come to an end

Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has been assumed lost “beyond any reasonable doubt”, according to a text message sent to the families and relatives of the passengers on board today. The text message in full reads as follows (via The BBC)

“Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived. As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, we must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean.”

The Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has confirmed “with great sadness” that the last know position of MH370 was in the Indian Ocean south of Perth, and that it has been accepted that the lives of all those who were on board have been lost.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott also spoke about the search earlier today, stating that it has been a matter of national and international concern, and he confirmed that the HMAS Success, a ship involved in the search effort, has spotted pieces of what may be debris from the plane, according to what Reuters is reporting.

This brings some form of closure to the search and rescue attempt, which has been ongoing since the 8th of March when contact with the plane was lost entirely, but there is still much speculation on the cause of the crash, with investigators still looking into hijacking, sabotage and technical faults.
