Man armed with a hammer robs cash in transit in Dublin, flees on bicycle

Gardaí at Kevin Street are appealing for information following a cash in transit (CIT) robbery on Thomas Street in Dublin on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 12.45pm when a CIT staff member was collecting a cash box from a retail premises on Thomas Street.

As the staff member was approaching the security van, he was approached and threatened by a lone man with a hammer.

The man took possession of the cash box and left the scene on a bicycle. No injuries were reported in the incident.

During follow up enquires an empty cash box was located on fire at St. Kevin’s Ave off New Street, Dublin 8 a short time later.

The fire was extinguished and the scene and cash box have been preserved for technical and forensic examination.

An Garda Síochána at Kevin Street are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly appealing to motorists who were on Thomas Street or St. Kevin’s Avenue / New Street between 12.30pm and 2.30pm on Tuesday to check video footage (including dash cam) recorded in the area and make it available to investigators.
