Man arrested in Drogheda after spitting at Garda conducting arrest

The man spat at a Garda member, who was conducting an arrest on a man who had attempted to flee the scene on foot.

A man in his late 30s has been arrested after he spat at a Garda member who was in the course of conducting an arrest in Drogheda.

The man was arrested and charged in relation to an incident of assault and public order that occurred in Moneymore in Drogheda on Wednesday (22 April).

At approximately 3.30pm, while Gardaí were responding to a separate incident in the area, the man approached Gardaí and interfered with a Garda member who was conducting an arrest.

The man proceeded to spit at the Garda. He was arrested and taken to Drogheda Garda Station, where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The initial incident being attended to by Gardaí was in relation to a man in his 20s who was reported to be in possession of a knife. This man evaded Gardaí and a foot pursuit ensued before was arrested a short distance away.

Both men are due to appear before Dundalk District Court on Thursday morning.
