Investigations are ongoing.

A man has been arrested in Dublin as part of an investigation targeting international criminal organisations committing cyber enabled frauds in Ireland.

Detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) carried out an operation in Dublin city on Friday, 11 September.

During the operation a 34-year-old Romanian national was arrested. He is currently detained at Store Street Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 and can be held for up to 7 days.

The investigation into Transaction Reversal Fraud was commenced following a report from a financial institution on 13 January this year.

TRF is a method used by criminals to steal cash from ATMs, and tricks the ATM into thinking no cash was dispensed, so the host typically does not debit the account.

Between 8 and 10 of January 2020, Gardaí said 18 ATM machines were targeted in Dublin resulting in the theft of money from customer’s accounts and damage to the ATMs.

GNECB continue work closely with UK Police and Europol in targeting criminal organisations engaged in cyber enabled fraud in this jurisdiction.

Investigations are ongoing and further updates will follow.
