Man arrested on suspicion of murder of eight-year-old girl in Wexford

Gardaí have issued an update on the investigation.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of eight-year-old girl Malika Noor Al Katib in Wexford.

In a statement, Gardaí had previously said they were investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a girl following a fatal assault at a domestic residence in New Ross on Sunday (1 December).

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene at approximately 11.45pm.

The girl, who was later named as Malika Noor Al Katib, was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment but passed away from her injuries in the early hours of Monday morning.

Gardaí had also previously said that a woman and man in their 30s were receiving treatment at University Hospital Wexford as well, with their injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

In an update on Tuesday, Gardaí confirmed that a man aged in his 30s has been released from hospital and arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.

A post-mortem examination was also conducted by State Pathologist Dr. Sally Anne Collis on Monday, the results of which will not be released for operational reasons.

Gardaí say they are continuing to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of the young girl and that they appealing to anyone who may have any information on the fatal assault to come forward.
