A man in Belfast is being treated for a suspected case of the contagious and deadly virus.

A man is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for symptoms associated with coronavirus, an infection which has killed 17 people in China at the time of writing.

According to the BBC, it is understood the man is currently being treated in an isolation ward.

It is believed that the man travelled from the Chinese city Wuhan at the weekend.

This city is one of two in China which are currently in a state of lockdown to halt the spread of the virus.

It also emerged on Thursday that four patients were being treated in Scottish hospitals after showing symptoms of the virus.

The World Health Organisation emergency committee met on Wednesday but failed to come to a decision on whether to declare a “global emergency” over the virus.

They are expected to meet again imminently, saying: “Our team in China working with local experts and officials to investigate the outbreak. We will have much more to say tomorrow.”
