Man cuts wires on M50 toll, causes €100k in damage and missed tolls

Alan Loughnane

Oh dear, oh dear…

There were some delays on the M50 on Friday night as repair work was carried on the toll plaza and Gardaí made an arrest.

The repairs?

Well, according to the Irish Independent, the overhead cables on the M50 Northbound toll bridge were cut, causing the toll bridge to be shut for a short time.

At 9.30pm on Friday night, the man cut the wires on the top bridge which shut down all the tag readers and meant that thousands of cars passed through it toll free.

The man posted a video on social media of the cut wires and Gardaí later arrested man when he came down from on top of the toll bridge.

He was taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station and detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

It’s reported that the damage and losses from tolls could amount to €100,000.

EFlow, the company who runs the toll said: “There was an incident on the M50 Motorway on Friday evening at the eFlow toll point.

“This resulted in a temporary closure of the motorway for a number of hours while the Emergency Services dealt with a person who accessed one of the gantries spanning the motorway.  The Emergency Services resolved the incident safely for all concerned.

“Transport Infrastructure Ireland and eFlow would like to thank the Emergency Services for their assistance with this unusual event and are relieved that nobody was hurt.

“eFlow engineering and maintenance personnel are currently on site to assess and repair any damage and to prevent any possible similar incidents occurring again.”
