Gardaí have confirmed that a man has passed away following a serious assault at a house in Ballincollig, County Cork, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place later on Sunday.

It is believed that a number of men armed with weapons went to the victim’s house shortly after 3am and seriously assaulted the man and his partner, a woman in her 30’s.

The assailants then left the house. The injured parties were later taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

The woman who was assaulted at the scene is currently being treated for her injuries.

Her condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Another adult female (early 30s) was present in the house at the time that the incident took place, along with two children under six years of age. They were not injured.

The house in Ballincollig is currently preserved for a technical examination.

A car was found burned out a number of kilometres away in Waterfall. That scene is also being preserved for a technical examination.
