Investigations into the assault are ongoing.
A man in his 30s has died following an assault at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.
Following the incident, which occurred last Friday evening (29 July), the inmate was receiving treatment for serious injuries at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
However, a Garda spokesperson confirmed to JOE that the man passed away in the early hours of Wednesday.
A post-mortem is scheduled to take place later on Wednesday and Gardaí say its results will determine the course of their investigation.
In another statement, the Irish Prison Service (IPS) extended its deepest sympathies to the man’s family and friends.
“The incident continues to be investigated by the Irish Prison Service and the Gardai,” an IPS spokesperson said.
“In addition, all deaths in custody are subject to investigation by the Inspector of Prisons.”
The Irish Prison Service can confirm that the prisoner who was seriously injured in an incident in Mountjoy Prison on Friday 29th July 2022 has died.
