Man in Longford has died from his injuries following serious assault incident

The incident occurred on Thursday, but the man succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon.

Gardaí from Ballymahon in Longford attended a serious assault incident which occurred outside a licenced premises in Foigha in Longford on the evening of Thursday 1 August, at approximately 5.30pm.

A male (50s) was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar with serious injuries and was pronounced dead this afternoon, Sunday 4 August.

Shortly after the incident on Thursday 1 August, a male in his 30s was arrested in connection with this incident and detained at Longford Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

He appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate St in Dublin 8 yesterday, Saturday 3 August.

A postmortem examination will be carried out tomorrow (Monday 5 August) and the local coroner has been notified.

Investigations are continuing.
