The UK coastguard has said it was lucky to find a man who had attempted to sail from Dorset in the UK to Ireland in an inflatable dingy.

Travelling abroad these days isn’t cheap, but this might be taking things a step too far.

According to reports from the BBC, a man was found 2.7 nautical miles south of Durdle Door on the south coast of the UK earlier today, but when first approached the man said he did not require any assistance.

The 6ft dingy had two paddles and the man was carrying a limited amount of food and water when rescue arrived. Apparently, he was using one paddle as a rudder, while using the other paddle as a mast. A thin piece of plastic sheet attached to the ‘mast’ was acting as his sail.

John Braisher, Watch Officer at Portland Coastguard said: “This man was extremely lucky to be found when he was. With no suitable communications equipment, limited life saving equipment and inadequate food and drink resources for his passage to Ireland, the outcome could have been very different.”

The man, who has not been named, was only 5km into a 480km journey when he was found.
