McDonald demanded that test results be returned quicker, describing the situation as “scandalous”.

Mary Lou McDonald has told the Dáil that she waited 16 days for her Covd-19 test results to come back.

The Sinn Féin leader said that this was not a rare instance, and that many others have waited even longer for their test results to come back.

McDonald confirmed recently that she received a positive diagnosis on Easter Monday (13 April), having been tested for the virus on 28 March.

She said: “I waited 16 days for a test result. This wasn’t unique, far from it. In fact, others waited longer times and in some cases these were frontline health workers.

“I think we can all accept that that is unacceptable, in fact, scandalous, and that it needs to be fixed.

“Just this week I heard a woman tell her story, and she’s waiting for her deceased husband’s test results. That man was tested on 27 March, and this woman can’t get a death certificate, she said, because of this delay.”
