Mary Lou McDonald plans on returning to work in “a number of weeks”.
Mary Lou McDonald has confirmed she underwent surgery at Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital last week.
The Sinn Féin leader said she is recovering well, but did not reveal what the surgery was for.
She issued a short update on Twitter, which read: “Personal news: I had surgery on Friday and am now recovering well.
“I expect to be back in action in a number of weeks,” she announced.

She praised the staff at The Rotunda for taking such incredible care of her during her time at the hospital.
“A million thanks to all the incredible staff at the Rotunda Hospital for your excellent care and kindness.”
“Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. Onwards and upwards,” she added.
The public sent well-wishes to the politician after she revealed the personal news.
One wrote: “Thank you for your kind words for the Rotunda Hospital staff. Take care of yourself as you recover.”
Another shared: “Get well soon. The staff in hospitals are top drawer and thankfully you got well looked after.”
“Speedy recovery. Focus on yourself while you recover,” another wrote.
