Very cool.

A rare natural phenomenon has formed in the US state of Maine and it’s causing a stir around the world.

A giant slow-turning ice disc, approximately 91m wide, has formed in the Presumpscot River in the city of Westbrook.

The formation was widely shared on social media and has drawn comparisons to an alien spacecraft, a carousel and the moon.

“It looks like the moon has landed in Westbrook, Maine!” the city wrote on social media.

The ice formation is believed to have formed naturally in a part of the river where there’s a circular current that creates a whirlpool effect, said Tina Radel, the city’s marketing and communications manager told ABC13.

Researchers believe ice discs spin because of temperature changes in the water, creating a vortex underneath.
