The Dublin hospital is limiting activities to essential services only.

The Mater Hospital in Dublin has announced that it is limiting activity to essential services only from Thursday 12 March.

The hospital said that patients whose appointments are being deferred will be informed by phone.

This comes in an attempt to deal with the spread of Covid-19 across the country and the rest of the world.

Visitor restrictions will also remain in place, with the only visitors allowed on the hospital campus being those who are visiting patients in critical care, vulnerable young adults or those receiving end of life care.

No children will be allowed to visit the hospital under any circumstance.

In a statement issued on Thursday, a spokesperson for the the hospital said: “The Mater regrets the impact that this will have on our patients but these new arrangements are necessary in order to deal with the impact of Covid-19.

“Our staff across every part of the hospital are carrying out trojan work around the clock to deal with the virus, care for those infected and to protect and care for other patients in the hospital.”

It is unclear at this time when normal service will resume in the hospital.

As of Wednesday night, the total number of cases in the Republic of Ireland was 43, and 61 on the island of Ireland.
