Maynooth psychology student, Kalin Doherty is tipped to win the hotly contested games.

In its 22nd year, the event challenges competitors to solving the puzzles in different manners, ranging from the traditional 3x3 cube to one-handed and blindfolded solving.

Furthermore, the events strict qualification process means only the fastest cubers in the continent are selected to compete.

Speaking to JOE, Kalin explained he didn't always show promise.

"My brother first showed me how to solve the standard Rubik’s Cube when I was 7 or 8," he said.

"I also found that just enjoying being with your friends and not taking the competition too seriously can really help with nerves," he said.

Despite the nerves, the psychology student said he is 'honoured' to be competing in the European Championships, which begins on Thursday, July 16.

"I’m so honoured to be part of such a big group going to Euros!

"Excited to meet lots of new people and reconnect with several others, and looking forward to making many unforgettable memories."
