Homenews

James Joyce was a "Proper G"

Here at JOE we like to consider ourselves as men with a diverse range of tastes and interests. Yes, we enjoy watching football in the local pub, however, it's not uncommon to find us sipping on a latte while we reflect on the themes of religion, cultural identity and adolescence in the works of James Joyce. Seriously, we do. Today marks Bloomsday as depicted in Joyce's most famous novel Ulysses. If the kids of today can't wrap their heads around the complex symbolism or the narrative stream of consciousness that's used in one of Joyce's most famous novel, then this video should speak to them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrHrk3NPNsk We're sorry that we couldn't find a lesson on Ulysses itself but, as the great man himself said, “A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery”.  If only JOE had an English teacher like this for the Leaving Cert.
