“It was awkward. I was a bit shocked.”
In an interview which will likely leave many in the monarchy very uncomfortable, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, managed to leave interviewer Orpah stunned more than once, but none more so when they revealed conversations with the Royal family about the skin tone of their son Archie.
During the two-hour prime-time interview with Oprah that aired on Sunday on CBS, Meghan referred to them as “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be”.
Meghan said the concerns were relayed to Harry but they declined to name the family member because it would be very damaging to them.
She said there have been several conversations with “family” on the topic.
The pair were asked by Oprah if these were “about how dark your baby is going to be?”
Meghan responded: “Potentially, and what that would mean or look like.”
“They were concerned that if he were too brown, that that would be a problem?” Oprah asked.
“I wasn’t able to follow up with why,” said Meghan “but if that’s the assumption you’re making, I think that feels like a pretty safe one.”
She clarified that she wasn’t a part of these conversations, but they were relayed to her through Harry.
Harry stated that he was not comfortable talking about it.
“That conversation, I am never going to share,” he said.
“But at the time, it was awkward. I was a bit shocked. There were some real obvious signs before we even got married that this was going to be really hard.”
Harry and Meghan also revealed that they are expecting a baby girl with Harry saying it is “amazing” to be having a daughter.
The couple also confirmed that this would be their last child.
