More windy than a post-Christmas, Brussels sprouts-eatin' Granny...

JOE

It seems like your Granny isn’t the only windy thing following all of those Brussels sprouts at Christmas time, as Met Éireann have this morning issued yet another Orange Warning.

According to the Met Éireann website, this most recent status update means that weather condidtions will be “stormy this morning with gusts of 100 to over 130km/h. Heavy, prolonged showers also with embedded thunderstorm activity. Potentially dangerous conditions on some roads and some flooding. The storm will abate slowly through the day and the showers will ease with temperatures today of 5 to 9 degrees.”

Following on from yesterday’s flood images sent in from all across the country, JOE reader Ciara Geraghty sent us in this update from Salthill, Galway.

According to The Irish Times this morning, weather warnings of tidal surges and floods have been issued for the cities of Dublin, Cork and Galway with motorists being advised to drive with extreme care as driving conditions on many roads are described as treacherous with widespread flooding reported in the west of the country.

ESB Networks also said approximately 5,000 customers in counties Donegal, Mayo and Clare are without power this morning after strong winds and heavy rain overnight.

Similarly, other reports are coming in that a number of homes in Clare have been evacuated with residents on the Promenade and at Golf Links Road in Lahinch were being advised to leave due to flooding. In Galway, AA Roadwatch is advising motorists to avoid all coastal areas, with reports that there is a bus stuck on the Coast Rd from Oranmore into the city, while in Belfast, police are telling people to prepare to evacuate in areas of the city if there is a tidal surge as forecast.
