Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning ahead of Easter weekend.

The national weather forecaster warns that low temperatures, wintry showers and even falls of sleet and snow are to be expected on Easter Sunday night right up until Monday morning.

The warning, posted on their website, is valid from Sunday 1 April  at 6pm to Monday 2 April at 6pm.

“A band of heavy rain in southern counties on Sunday night, will extend northwards overnight and during Monday, turning wintry with falls of sleet and snow in some areas.”

Gardaí have also chimed in with a warning of their own, advising the Irish public to exercise extreme caution on the roads this weekend, due to a high number of collisions already being recorded this Good Friday.

A number of injuries but no fatalities were reported.

Chief Superintendent Finbarr Murphy of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau advised road-users to exercise caution when driving this Easter weekend.

“Hailshowers pose significant risks to road users particularly on motorways,” Murphy said.

“Drivers on motorways need to be vigilant and ready to stop when and if necessary and they need to be able to stop the vehicle safely in order to avoid collisions.

“Hailshowers have resulted in multi-vehicle crashes recently. Please drive to the conditions, reduce your speed and increase your braking distance.”
