Met Éireann says snow will fall in large parts of Ireland this week

Paul Moore

Weather warning Saturday 2 February

Get ready.

If you haven’t cracked out the hot water bottle and stocked up on tea bags already, then consider this to be your warning.

After a few chilly days that saw snow in parts of Ireland, Met Éireann is now saying that snow will fall this week, mainly in Connacht, Ulster and on high ground.

Here’s what’s expected for the week.

Much of east Leinster and Ulster will be dry on Monday morning with frost and icy patches, which should clear later.

Conditions are set to be cloudier to the west and south with patchy rain or drizzle. Showers will spread from the west this afternoon.

Monday night is expected to be dry with clear spells and with frost and icy patches forming. It’s going to be a cold one, with temperatures falling between -1 and +2 degrees.

Rain and showers will continue in the west and north.

Tuesday is also set to be very cold. In the morning, rain and sleet will clear eastwards with sunshine and wintry showers following for the rest of the day. Some of the showers will see snowfall, especially in Connacht and Ulster and on high ground.

Overall, expect frost, rain, sleet and snow.

Tuesday night will be very cold too, with wintry showers continuing in the western coastal counties, with falls of sleet and snow away from coasts.

Frost and icy patches are expected throughout the country and the mercury is set to drop with lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees expected.

Wednesday will continue to be very cold with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers. Some will be sleet or snow, especially in northern areas and on hills and mountains.

Severe frost and icy patches will develop on Wednesday night too.

As for Thursday, the morning will be dry but rain, sleet and snow will spread from the southwest.

Frost and ice are set to develop by Thursday night along with further wintry showers.

Friday, you guessed it, will also be cold with sunshine and further wintry showers expected. Next weekend will be chilly with wintry showers, with frost and ice expected at nighttime.
