Michael O’Leary blasts Sinn Féin and Independent TD’s in this compelling interview

Paul Moore

“I want to vote for sensible, stable governments and not a bunch of lunatics”

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary isn’t a man to mince his words and he has been quite vocal this week about the Luas workers and the economic consequences of Brexit. In a recent interview with RTÉ Radio 1’s Countrywide, O’Leary has turned his attention to Irish politics and the charismatic CEO was as upright as always.

Speaking about the Irish electorate and the outcome of the recent General Election, he had this to say, “I’ve great sympathy for the politicians and the electorate hasn’t served the country well by coming up with an indecisive vote”.

Regarding the Anti-Austerity Alliance-People Before Profit and the Independent TD’s that were elected to the Dail, O’Leary says, “you can’t keep electing the local lunatic” and that the public should “vote for parties that are capable of running the country”.

The formation of a potential new government has been the main talking point in recent weeks and O’Leary feels that the electorate has to shoulder some of the responsibility, “we’re very poor in taking the bad news and we seem to lurch from election to election, voting for whoever gives us the most treats”. The Ryanair CEO also feels that Independents have “no plans for running the country, they just want to stay in opposition” and that “Independents do nothing, they’re grandstanders. They’re not going to get into government and the worst governments that we’ve had here are when they’ve been held to ransom by one or two Independents”.

O’Leary also took aim at Sinn Féin by describing their economic policies are “utterly crazy” and that their policy of taxing the richer people in Irish society will see the majority of entrepreneurs leave.

In the interest of fairness, O’Leary did state that he’s willing to see Sinn Féin in government but only as a precursor to seeing “the other side get in again”,
