Investigations are underway following the incident on Monday.

Chairman of Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club Francis Jones has said that the club will be out of their own grounds “for a number of years” following a sinkhole opening up on the pitch on Monday.

Speaking on Morning Ireland on Tuesday morning, Jones said that: “The whole complex is unusable.”

Jones did speak about the kindness of local clubs, who have offered their pitches to Mitchells for the foreseeable future: “Thankfully local clubs have contacted us offering their facilities, and we’re very grateful for that. Lucky enough now it’s coming to the end of the season, so teams are winding down on that front.”

He spoke about the severity of the incident, saying: “The biggest thing for us is the shock of it and the devastation to our football club and our community.”

A spokesperson for the Monaghan County Council told JOE on Tuesday morning that Carrickmacross/Kingscourt Road (R179) will remain closed from Drumgossat Crossroads to Drummond.

In addition, the LP4900 to Drumgossat School will also remain closed to traffic.

A meeting between An Garda Siochana, Monaghan County Council and Gyproc representatives, will take place later this afternoon, following which a further update will be issued.
