The plane left Chitral bound for Islamabad at approximately 10am this morning.
More than 40 people are feared dead after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flgiht crashed in the Havelian region of north Pakistan on Wednesday morning.
Approximately 40 passengers and eight crew were on board the flight and the prospect of there being any survivors is believed to be slim.
A statement issued by the airline read as follows:
“We regret to inform that PIA’s ATR-42 aircraft operating as PK-661, carrying around 40 persons, lost its contact with control tower on its way from Chitral to Islamabad a short while ago.
“All resources are being mobilised to locate the aircraft.”
Flight PK-661 lost contact with the control tower at approximately 10am on Wednesday morning (4.50 pm local time), shortly before it was due to arrive in Islamabad.
Taj Muhammad Khan, a government official based in the Havelian region, told Reuters: “All of the bodies are burned beyond recognition.
“The debris is scattered.”
Pakistan International Airlines flights were banned from flying to Europe by the European Union in 2007 due to safety concerns.
