But there’s away to avoid the charge…

Coffee lovers could be facing an increase in the price of their morning coffee.

A new charge of up to 15c could be levied on disposable coffee cups by the government in an effort to tackle excess waste.

The levy being considered is similar to the plastic bag levy introduced and would add a reported 10-15 cent to each cup of coffee.

The mesure is aimed at encouraging people to buy reusable cups and cut down on the use of disposable ones.

According to the Irish Independent, Denis Naughten confirmed the news and talks have already taken place with a number of major companies about introducing the measure.

Revenue generated from the Plastic Bag Environmental Levy goes into the Environmental Fund. This fund is used to support waste management, litter and other environmental initiatives.

The levy on the use of plastic shopping bags generated €166m for the exchequer in the first 10 years it was introduced from 2002-2012.

It also led to a 90% fall in the use of disposable plastic bags from shoppers.
